YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste any YouTube link. We pull every thumbnail size YouTube stores for that video so you can preview and download the one you need.

Works with watch links, youtu.be short links, /shorts/ links, /embed/ links or a bare 11-character video ID.

A great thumbnail still needs a first push

A video with no early views rarely gets suggested, no matter how strong the thumbnail is. Our YouTube view packages give a new upload its first block of watch traffic.

Every YouTube video has a set of still images sitting on Google’s image servers, and YouTube keeps each one at several fixed sizes. This tool reads the video ID out of the link you paste, asks those servers which sizes actually exist for that video, and hands you the file. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and you never need an account.

Creators use it to study thumbnails that are already winning in their niche, to recover a thumbnail they published but no longer have the source file for, and to build reference boards before designing a new one. Editors and channel managers use it to check how a thumbnail holds up when it is scaled down to the size a phone actually renders it at.

How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

  1. Copy the URL of the video from your browser bar, the YouTube app share sheet, or a Shorts link.
  2. Paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnails.
  3. Every size YouTube has for that video appears with its real pixel dimensions and file size.
  4. Press Download on the one you want. The file saves straight to your device as a .jpg.

Which thumbnail sizes YouTube keeps

YouTube generates a fixed ladder of thumbnail files for every upload. Not every video has all of them: the largest size only exists if the uploader supplied an image at least that big, which is why this tool checks each one instead of assuming.

  • Max resolution (1280×720) is the one you almost always want. It is the file the uploader supplied, and it is the only size big enough to reuse in a design.
  • High quality (480×360) always exists. It is YouTube’s reliable fallback, and it is a useful stand-in when the max-resolution version was never generated.
  • Medium quality (320×180) is what the YouTube app tends to load on a slow connection.
  • Standard (640×480) is a 4:3 crop that older embeds still use.
  • Default (120×90) is the tiny one used in sidebars and playlists.

What a good thumbnail actually does

A thumbnail is not decoration. It is the only piece of your video that competes in the feed, and it is usually rendered at about 210 pixels wide on a phone. That is the size at which your design has to work. If the text is unreadable and the subject is unclear at that scale, the design has failed regardless of how it looks at full size.

The fastest way to improve yours is to collect ten thumbnails from videos that already outperform in your topic, download them here at full size, and then shrink them all to phone size side by side. The pattern that separates the winners is almost never what you expect from looking at them large.

Is downloading a YouTube thumbnail allowed?

The thumbnail image is served publicly by Google and this tool only requests the same public file your browser already loads when the video appears in a feed. That said, the image itself belongs to whoever uploaded the video. Using someone else’s thumbnail as research, reference or commentary is normal practice. Republishing it as your own artwork is not, and we would not recommend it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the HD version missing for some videos?

YouTube only creates the 1280×720 file when the uploader supplied an image at least that large. Older videos, phone uploads and many Shorts never got one. When that happens we show you the largest size that does exist, which is usually the 480×360 high quality file.

Does this work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/ link and it is handled exactly like a normal video. Shorts thumbnails are stored in the same place under the same video ID.

Can I download the thumbnail of a private or unlisted video?

Unlisted videos work, because their thumbnails are served publicly to anyone with the ID. Private videos do not, because Google does not serve their images publicly at all.

Do you save the links I paste?

No. This tool runs entirely inside your browser. The video ID never reaches our servers, and the image is fetched directly from Google’s image servers by your own device.

The image opens instead of downloading. Why?

That happens when a browser extension blocks the download step. Right-clicking the preview and choosing Save image as will always work as a fallback.
