Username Checker

Type a handle once and we check it across thirteen platforms at the same time, and tell you honestly which ones cannot be checked at all.

Letters, numbers, dots, dashes and underscores. No @ needed.

A new handle with an empty profile is a hard sell

A fresh account with no followers gets very little benefit of the doubt. Our starter packages give a new handle a credible baseline on day one.

Picking a handle you can keep everywhere is much easier before you have an audience than after. This checks one name across thirteen platforms at once and tells you where it is free, where it is taken, and where nobody can tell you either way.

That last part is the difference between this and most username checkers. Instagram, TikTok and X all refuse to serve profile pages to automated requests: Instagram redirects everything to its login page, TikTok returns an empty placeholder, and X requires a signed-in session. A tool that shows you a confident green tick for those three is guessing. This one gives you a direct link and says so.

How to use the Username Checker

  1. Type the username you want. No @ needed.
  2. Press Check. All platforms are queried at the same time, so it takes seconds rather than a minute.
  3. Green means free, grey means taken, and amber means that platform did not give a clear answer this time.
  4. For the three platforms that cannot be checked automatically, use the direct links to look yourself.

What gets checked, and how

Each platform is checked in the way that platform actually allows, and every method below was tested against a name known to be taken and a name known to be free before it was included.

  • Checked by page response: YouTube, GitHub, SoundCloud, Patreon, Linktree, Tumblr, DEV and Kick. These return a clean not-found for a free name.
  • Checked through a public API: Twitch and Kick, which both answer definitively and quickly.
  • Checked by page content: Telegram, Pinterest, Medium and Steam, which return a page either way, so we look for a marker that only a real profile carries.
  • Not checked, with a link instead: Instagram, TikTok and X, for the reasons above.

Choosing a handle you will not regret

  • Keep it short and sayable. If you cannot tell someone your handle out loud in a noisy room and have them find you, it is too complicated.
  • Avoid numbers and underscores where you can. They are the first thing people mistype, and they read as a fallback choice.
  • Take it everywhere at once, even where you will not post. Registering a handle on a platform you might use in two years costs nothing today and is impossible to buy back later.
  • Check the search results too. A handle that is free everywhere but shares a name with something unpleasant is not actually free.
  • Think about the domain. If the matching .com is available, take it at the same time.

What “available” really means

Available here means the platform served a not-found for that name at the moment we asked. It does not mean the platform will let you register it: most reserve trademarks, offensive terms and their own product names, and some hold recently deleted accounts for months. It also does not mean it will still be free in an hour. If a name matters to you, register it now rather than after you have designed a logo around it.

Frequently asked questions

Why will you not check Instagram or TikTok?

Because we cannot do it honestly. Both serve automated requests a login wall or an empty page, so any answer would be a guess dressed as a fact. We give you a direct link instead, which takes five seconds.

One platform came back amber. What now?

Amber means that platform did not answer clearly this time, usually a timeout or a rate limit. Try again in a minute, or open the link and look. It is never a hidden “taken”.

Is the result cached?

Yes, for a few hours, so that a repeat check is instant. If you have just registered the name, expect the old answer for a short while.

Does checking a name reserve it?

No. Nothing here registers anything. If a name matters, go and claim it on the platforms that matter most to you first.

Why is a name free on the big platforms but taken on small ones?

Usually a squatter or an abandoned account from years ago. Most platforms have a process for claiming an inactive handle that matches a trademark, but it is slow. It is generally easier to choose a different name.
